Hyperlipidemia refers to elevated blood levels of cholesterol, including HDL and LDL, and triglycerides. This excess amount of fats in the blood can be the cause of the development of plaques in the arteries, known as atherosclerosis. Research has provided evidence to doctors that this process may be triggered by generalized inflammation and high amounts of oxidative stress in the body. When these factors are present “nicking” can occur in the arteries, which resembles a small wound. The body responds by using cholesterol to form a plaque and repair the wound. Continued inflammation and high blood pressure make atherosclerosis progress and increase the patient’s risk for heart attack or stroke.
