Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, or prostate enlargement typically presents as frequent urination, sometimes with urgency, and especially at night. This issue is incredibly common, affecting over 50% of men in their lifetime. Risk of developing prostate enlargement increases with age. Over 95% of men that are aged 85 and older are affected.
Male hormonal imbalance may contribute to the development of prostate enlargement. Specifically, improper metabolism of testosterone in the body leads to an increase in di-hydrotestosterone (DHT) in the prostate itself. The high levels of DHT feed the growth of the prostate. Exposure to high amounts of estrogens in the environment may contribute to this improper metabolism.
At Vitalia, we recommend these ways to decrease your exposure to environmental estrogens:
- Buy hormone and antibiotic free meats and dairy products
- Eat wild fish low in mercury, such as wild alaskan salmon, blue crab, flounder, haddock, pollack and trout
- Do not store or heat food in plastic containers; use glass
- Use natural pest control instead of pesticides
- Use earth-friendly, non-toxic materials in your home
